Fire Breaks Phase 1 / Phase 2

Major items completed in Phase I:

  1. Developed 30 miles of 300’ wide fuel breaks (2000 acres).
  2. Developed one reservoir and two springs for fire control, wildlife, and watering sources for goats/sheep in Phase II.
  3. Polygon burned 500 acres with 2000 acres planned for this winter and spring.
  4. Started a long-term nesting bird monitoring program at 16 different sites – to help determine the effects of our “on the ground” treatments.
  5. Continuing work on long-term grazing/browsing trial with UC Cooperative Extension.
  6. Continuing our Red Legged, and Yellow Legged Frog telemetry research through BLM and Humboldt State University.

In preparation for Phase II we have:

  1. Received a USFS Economic Recovery Grant, and Chico State Foundation Grant to develop marketing infrastructure for meat goats and hair sheep. Should be completed by Spring of 2005.
  2. Applied for, and will probably receive, a Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Grant (SARE) to determine nutrient quality of the chaparral species we are working with.
